FreightWaves recently highlighted our collaboration with Relay Payments and PURE Freight Lines to combat fuel fraud, a problem that costs fleets hundreds of millions of dollars every year.

While scams like double brokering and cargo theft often make headlines, fuel fraud remains a persistent but less discussed threat. Fuel card abuse, pump tampering, and falsified fuel consumption records can take a massive financial toll on fleets of all sizes. As Relay Payments co-founder Spencer Barkoff explained to FreightWaves, carriers can lose tens of thousands of dollars per month due to card-skimming incidents alone. These situations create headaches for operations teams, who must issue new cards, dispute fraudulent transactions, and ensure drivers can refuel without delays.

PURE Freight Lines had experienced these exact challenges firsthand. According to Milo Dubak, CEO of PURE, frequent fraud incidents not only impacted operations but also eroded driver trust, as drivers often had to wait for replacement fuel cards. To address this, PURE partnered with Amous TMS and Relay Payments, combining technology and strategic integrations to stop fuel theft at the source.

Before partnering with Relay, Amous helped reduce fuel theft through card activation/deactivation features in its TMS. While this helped, it wasn’t a long-term solution. With the Relay digital fuel payment platform integrated directly into Amous TMS, fleets now have a comprehensive solution that prevents unauthorized transactions entirely.

“Relay’s digital fuel payments represent a revolutionary technology in the logistics industry, addressing the root cause of fuel theft,” said Mark Shevchuk, CEO of Amous TMS.

The results for PURE speak for themselves. The integration has completely eliminated fuel theft, saving the company an estimated $10,000–$15,000 per month, while improving efficiency, transparency, trust, and profitability. Dubak noted that these benefits are driving PURE’s business toward continued growth and success.

Amous TMS is a cloud-based enterprise system with over 120 integrations, serving carriers, brokers/3PLs, and shippers. The direct API integration with Relay allows fleets like PURE to monitor real-time fuel consumption, promptly identify inefficiencies, and improve overall cost management. Future plans include cross-referencing Relay transactions with ELD fuel data, adding multiple layers of security to further prevent fraud.

Relay Payments is accepted at more than 1,500 truck stops nationwide, including over 800 Pilot Co. locations, allowing fleets to fuel up safely and continue to benefit from pre-negotiated discounts and direct bill arrangements. Together with the Amous TMS Driver app, these tools also enhance the driver experience with added convenience and support while on the road.

All three companies — Amous, PURE, and Relay — share a vision of revolutionizing the logistics industry through technology and collaboration. As Dubak noted,

“As we navigate the intersection of the transportation world and advanced technology, I am optimistic that this partnership will unveil innovative solutions to tackle other industry challenges, such as double brokering, contributing to the evolution of the trucking world.”
